    General Survey

    Jiangsu Province is situated in the eastern part of China by the Yellow Sea and the down stream areas of the Yangtze River and the Huai River, with Shangdong province to the north, Anhui province to the west, Shanghai Municipality and Zhejiang Province to the southeast. The province covers an area of 102, 600 square kilometers, 1.06% of the total area of the country.

    The Yangtze River flows from west to east, and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal from north to south through the province. There are some low hills and hilly land dotting the southwest and northern borders, covering 14% of the province¡¯s total area. The area of plains covers 69% and the water surface takes up 17% of the province.

    By the end of 2006, the total population of Jiangsu was 75.50 million, leaving Jiangsu to be the most densely populated province in China with average 736 persons per square kilometer.

    Jiangsu province is one of the most economically developed regions in China. In 2006, the GDP of the province reached RMB 2154.84billion,ranking the third place in China.GDP per capita was US$3,598 in Jiangsu, which is nearly double the nation's average. Jiangsu has developed well its infrastructure. By the end of 2006, the province has built 126,900 kilometers of roads, of which more than 3500 kilometers are of express high ways. It has 9 airports. Nanjing Lukou International Airport has passenger service to Asian countries and regions and cargo service to different parts of the world including USA and Europe. At present, the province has 32.25 million fixed telephone line users,28.48 million mobile phone users, 5.76 million internet users. The popularization rate of telephone is 80.4 per 100 persons. Private owned cars reached 901,000.

    In 2006, Jiangsu received some 199.36 million tourists, among them there were 4.45 million foreigners, 1.30 million tourists from Hongkong, Macau and Taiwan.

    Agriculture

    Jiangsu is one of China¡¯s most important regions in agricultural production. In the year 2006, the added value in agriculture was RMB 154.49 billion Yuan, increased by 5.0% over the previons year.

    The major agricultural products of Jiangsu are grain, cotton, edible oil and meat.

    Industry

    Jiangsu is one of the birth place of China¡¯s modern industry. The six mainstays of Jiangsu industry are electronics, telecommunication equipment, textiles, petro-chemicals, metallurgical industry and machinery building. Their output value makes up over 80% of the gross industrial output value of the province.

    In 2006, the added value in industry was RBM 1218.65 billion, increased by 16.0% over the previous year.

    Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation

    Jiangsu province ranks the second by volume of trade in the country. In 2006, the import and export volume of the province reached US$ 284.00 billion, showing an increase of 24.6% over the previous year, of which US$ 160.42 billion for export volume ,up 30.5% and US$ 123.58 billion for import, up 17.7%.

    By the end of 2006, Jiangsu has altogether approved 78,622 foreign invested project, involving US$ 279.01 billion of foreign investment in contract. The foreign investment actually paid in exceeded US$ 17.4 billion in 2006, ranking the first place in the country for consecutive four years running.

    Jiangsu province has made gradual progress in overseas investment and technological cooperation. in 2006, Jiangsu has made US$ 332.00 million investment in foreign countries.
